Xfinity/Comcast X1 xi6/xid1 box issues w/samsung tv and marantz AVR

Photo by Sharad Bhat on Unsplash

I’ve been having a lot of problems with several different generations of the X1 boxes, they are running into Marantz receivers, and then to Samsung Q70 series TV’s

Setup 1: Xfinity Xi6 box – Marantz SR6014 receiver – connected via HDMI over CAT6 to Samsung Q70 TV

Occasionally, the xfinity box will go into like a “dumb” mode, where it doesn’t show any GUI elements, the guide doesn’t work, and changing channels sometimes works, but it doesn’t include any of the X1 elements (bottom bar, etc)… it’s like the tuner is working in a fallback mode.

Rebooting the X1 box always fixes it… but I’ve had a tech out like 4 times, signal is good, and I’ve tried about 5 different boxes now… different models and they all end up doing this…

This problem also is sporadic and spreads to my other TV’s, which are also samsung Q70 series and marantz receivers (but different models)

The reboot always fixes it, sometimes they fix themselves on their own… that’s what is so aggrevating about this problem.

Before the new xi6 box, we had xid1 boxes running at 1080p, and still the same behavior.

The only thing that seemed to have change now that we have the 4k xi6 box is we occasionally get a black screen instead of “no signal” or stuck with the channel changing only.

3% of Latinos use 'Latinx' to describe themselves, poll finds

3% of Latinos use 'Latinx' to describe themselves, poll finds

In the 1970s, many Americans started using the term “Hispanic” to identify people with a heritage in Spain or Latin America. In the 1990s, Americans added the word “Latino” for men and “Latina” for women.

But it bothered some people that we also used the male word for groups that included both men and women. And some people prefer not to identify with either gender.

So now the preferred term, coined in the new millennium, is Latinx. Who prefers that exactly?

A new poll by the Pew Research Center finds that barely a quarter of Americans who identify as Hispanic or Latino have even heard of the word Latinx. And only 3% say they actually use it to describe themselves.

KCRW speaks with Daniel Hernandez, who covered this for the LA Times.

KCRW: Were you surprised to see that only 3% of Latinos were using Latinx?

Daniel Hernandez: “It was pretty surprising and … a little lower than I expected. Because you go online today or you check out some of the campuses here in California and in the southwest, Hollywood, even in newspapers like my own, you do see it sort of popping up more and more.

And I think these results really are kind of a bucket of cold water on the idea that this has become kind of the more normalized or go-to catch-all term for this very big and very diverse community.

And I think that’s a bit of a wake up call on the possibility that some of us might exist and operate in these kinds of bubbles or silos of information, in which we sort of think that the way that we’re speaking to each other — young people, democratic, liberal, progressive leaning people, English dominant Latinos, U.S.-born Latinos — is kind of the way that everyone speaks to each other. And I think that this survey shows us that that is not the case.”

Why do we have a word like this? What is it describing? Who are the folks that are included in this new label?

“It’s important to note that it was coined among queer Latin people. … We need to always recognize and respect and honor the problem that a term like Latinx is trying to address.

Latino and Hispanic both emerged in American English. And it mostly serves the needs of a broader American society to address this massive group. It’s similar, let’s say, to Asian American, which can be used to describe Korean Americans, Chinese Americans, Vietnamese Americans, and so on. But among the Asian community, people identify generally usually by their national origin. Well, the same is true among the Hispanic, Latino community. People generally identify as either Cuban or Mexican or Salvadorian or Guatemalan.

… This is a term that tends to serve non-Latinos to sort of have a term for all of us.

But secondarily, I would say the current debate over this term — because there is actually a pretty hardy, raging debate over its use — should it erase the needs to center queer Latinx people, and understand that they don’t feel represented by either Latino or Latina?”

What would Latino or Latina people prefer to be called then?

“It gets to sort of where we fit in society. I’ve always said blow the whole house up. We don’t need these terms at all, or very rarely.

Oftentimes we will use Latino when we are referring to the guys outside the Home Depot who are day laborers. But Latino could also refer to someone like Alfonso Cuarón or Guillermo del Toro; Mexican-born, Mexican-raised Hollywood directors; even Antonio Banderas, who’s from Spain.

It is such a broad grouping that really any term, I think, is always going to have kind of dead zones that aren’t being addressed. So I think moving forward, we’re never going to agree … on any single term that is useful for all of us.

It will be interesting to see if Latinx does gain more traction. But I think … Latinx attempts to address a problem in Spanish for a term that was invented in English. And so that’s why me in particular, although I am queer myself, I do sort of feel that Latino tends to be the most generally useful

term still to … identify this group when large-scale grouping and identification needs to occur.

That might change in five years. That might change in two years. That might change in 100 years. But once you start attempting to degender, ‘Spanish,’ well, you’re literally going to have to change half of the words in Spanish and half the language. And Spanish will end up being just a collection of x’s across your page. And I just don’t think that is viable or reasonable at this point.”

F1 Live Stream Spanish GP 2020, Start Time and Broadcast Channel: Formula 1 is headed to Barcelona for the sixth race of the 2020 season.

After the dramatic double-header races at Silverstone, it is time to move to Barcelona in Spain for the sixth round of the F1 2020 season.

Last weekend, Red Bull broke Mercedes’ race-winning monopoly this season, with Max Verstappen grabbing a fantastic win. This moved him ahead of Valtteri Bottas in the overall Drivers’ Standings. This weekend, it is going to be a fascinating race for the top between Verstappen, Bottas and Lewis Hamilton, the reigning champion.

Elsewhere, Ferrari are putting in a mixed performance, with Charles Leclerc performing admirably, but his teammate Sebastian Vettel struggling. Ferrari will face strong competition from the likes of Racing Point, Renault, McLaren and AlphaTauri.

Racing Point have a lot on their plate this weekend, with Sergio Perez testing negative for covid-19. It is going to interesting to see if they stick-or-twist with Nico Hulkenberg, who has been brilliant since making his F1 comeback a fortnight ago.

The Silverstone-based outfit also have the Ferrari and Renault’s appeal for a stringent punishment to look into. This comes after FIA docked 15 points off Racing Point for alleged irregularities in usage of ‘listed parts’, especially the brake ducts. Racing Point have claimed innocence, and have put an appeal of their own.

Google remembers Wear OS exists, announces update with handwashing timer

clear drinking glass with beer
Photo by Brett Jordan on Unsplash

We were just thinking about Google’s left-for-dead Wear OS smartwatch platform yesterday and coincidentally the company has announced a major update coming this fall.

The next over-the-air update will focus on performance with startup time for apps loading up to 20 percent faster, according to Google’s Android Developers Blog. That’s good because it’s maddening to literally watch the time tick away when you try to open Wear OS apps.

The most useful new feature may be a handwashing timer. Google says the timer is “in response to COVID-19.” The timer lets users set a countdown to help them wash their hands for a preset time. It’s a knockoff of the handwashing feature Apple announced for watchOS 7 coming to Apple Watch this fall with one big difference: it’s not hands-free.

Whereas the handwashing feature on Apple Watch automatically turns on when you wash your hands — the smartwatch actually listens for the unique sound signature of scrubbing hands and then turns on the timer — Wear OS’s feature is not automatic. Google confirmed to Input users the feature is a “dedicated tile you tap to trigger.”

I don’t know about you, but if I’m washing my hands for 20 seconds because I’m worried it may have the virus on it, it’s counterintuitive to touch my smartwatch’s screen and potentially contaminate it before cleaning my hands.

All isn’t lost: you can still use a voice command to call up the Assistant to “help you wash your hands.”

Support for new chips — Everyone and their parents know that Wear OS has languished over the past few years. Software updates have been few and far between and Google didn’t even give it stage time during past I/O Developer conferences (RIP).

Google’s seeming disinterest in Wear OS is also Qualcomm’s fault. The smartwatch chips that power many Wear OS smartwatches simply haven’t gotten more powerful or faster. Not enough to justify adopting them and increasing prices for brands like Fossil at least.

But good news: this new software update will support the new Snapdragon Wear 4100 and 4100+ chips and faster LTE.

Updated weather app — The weather app is getting a visual overhaul, too, with an hourly breakdown of the day’s forecast.

A screenshot of the updated Wear OS weather app

New weather UI, who dis?Google

Where’s the Pixel Watch? — If you’ve got a Wear OS smartwatch, this update is something to look forward to. It’ll give some owners a reason to dust their wearables off. But the real question is: where’s the Pixel Watch?

We’re all still waiting to see Google integrate its $2.1 billion acquisition of Fitbit into a smartwatch that would presumably give the Apple Watch real competition. Besides rebooting the Pixel, Google needs to reset its smartwatch platform. A good way to lead would be with a Pixel-branded smartwatch. It’d strengthen the Pixel brand — really beat the drum on an ecosystem — and revive interest in Android smartwatches.

Right now, Samsung is the only one with alternatives to the Apple Watch that are worth buying. It’s not winning by innovation — the Galaxy Watch 3 is kind of a snooze — but by default. Android users deserve more choice. Something better that’s less fashion and focuses on fitness just like the Apple Watch.

Remotec zfm-80 – timer-off

Hey everyone – so I’m actually using the Remotec ZFM-80 as a button to release the front gate – thought being that we can remotely unlock the gate when someone rings the doorbell and we verify them through the front yard Ring camera. I’m trying to figure out a way to do one of two things, a) configure the device handler to only put the switch to ON for 5 seconds any time it’s activated, or b) set a Scene called “Activate Button” which will turn on, wait 5 seconds, then turn off. The OEM handler for the device only has an on/off, though it does have a Timer – problem is I can’t figure out how to set that timer from a Scene.

Any thoughts on a way around this or do I basically just need to get someone to create custom code for this?

Alien Invasion Defense Game Project: ELITE Has Arrived

Board and tabletop game publishers CMON and Artipia Games have announced that the alien invasion defense board game Project: ELITE, a real-time action game where we must defend our planet from an invading horde of aliens. is now available for retail sale. The game is priced at $99.99 and available now from the Asmodee webstore or from your FLGS.

Project: ELITE has finally hit retail after a successful Kickstarter campaign back in near the end of 2018. The game was funded in only 32 minutes, and ended its campaign with over $630,000 (of a $100,000 goal) and over 5,000 backers. This version of the game is a re-boot of the original Artipia Games Project: ELITE from 2016.

Project: ELITE has an app (for that) to go along with the game. The Project: ELITE companion app includes an Action Phase round timer and tracker, as well as seven musical audio tracks to match with the games’ maps. The companion app is only available for smartphones and tablets, and can be found on the Apple Store and Google Play.

In Project: ELITE, we are the elite, heroes assigned the project of alien butt-whooping after they invade Earth. Instead of each side taking turns to make their actions, ELITE uses a real-time system where each round is two minutes, and we roll Action dice to move and attack across the game board. If any Action dice turn up the Alien Face side during our rolls, then the aliens also make their attack and movements. The companion app’s timer counts down each two-minute round, making the rounds engaging and intense as we attempt to halt the alien invasion and either destroy them, or get them to leave our space rock alone.

ELITE comes with an abundance of game goodies in the box, including 59 ELITE and alien miniatures, 148 cards, 18 Hit dice and 24 Action dice, 108 cardboard tokens, a double-sided game board, rulebook, and more. ELITE also comes with rules for three difficulty levels of play – Easy, Medium, and Hard – as well as single-player rules.
